When to use this
Every set of report columns you save — months, quarter-to-date, budget variance and so on — is stored as a named column layout that appears in the Columns dropdown on every report. This article shows you how to delete the layouts you no longer need, what to do when ScaleXP reports that a layout is still in use, and how to rename the ones you keep, so the dropdown only lists the layouts your team actually uses.
For creating and editing the columns themselves, see How to create and edit report columns.
1. Open the column editor
- Open any report from the Reports tab.
- Click Edit at the top right and choose Edit columns. Alternatively, click New column layout next to the Columns dropdown — either route opens the same column editor.

2. Find the layout in the columns dropdown
- In the column editor, open the Columns dropdown at the top of the page.
- Type part of the layout's name in the search box if the list is long.

In the editor, each layout in the list shows a pencil icon and a bin icon on the right. (The same dropdown on the report view lists the layouts without these icons — it is for switching between layouts, not managing them.)
3. Delete the layout
- Click the bin icon next to the layout you want to remove.
- Click Confirm in the Delete columns configuration dialog.
If no report is using the layout, it disappears from the Columns dropdown on every report straight away.
4. Move any reports off the layout first
ScaleXP protects layouts that are still in use. If any report is using the one you are deleting, the Delete columns configuration dialog lists those reports and the delete does not go ahead until they have been switched to another layout.

- Note the report names in the dialog and click Cancel.
- Open each listed report, choose a different layout from the Columns dropdown at the top of the report, and save.
- Return to the column editor, open the Columns dropdown and click the bin icon next to the layout again. With no reports depending on it, the delete completes.
5. Rename a layout instead
If the layout is still useful but the name is unclear — a test or New configuration that turned into your board pack — click the pencil icon next to it, type the new name and press Enter. Clear names make the dropdown much easier to use when you have several layouts for different audiences.
6. Save and check the report
Click Save & Exit to return to the report, then open the Columns dropdown to confirm the layout is gone or renamed. To start a fresh set of columns, use New column layout and follow How to create and edit report columns.
