How should I code my invoices? (To revenue or balance sheet)

Whether to code invoices to revenue or to a deferred revenue balance sheet account, and what each choice means for your journals.

Table of Contents

We recommend coding invoices to your revenue accounts. Then map each revenue account you use to one or more deferred revenue accounts, so ScaleXP always reads from mapped accounts. Each month, ScaleXP journals move the unearned portion to the balance sheet and release it as it is earned. See Deferred revenue 1: Map and filter your accounts.

You can code invoices to the balance sheet instead. If that revenue ends up in more than one revenue account, you need one balance sheet account per destination revenue account, so ScaleXP knows where to journal it.

Avoid mixing the two methods, coding some invoices to revenue and others to deferred revenue.
